Calling

— For the week of July 27, 2008 —

What you say is in God's name and for His sake.

I press on toward the goal to win the prize
for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 3:14

I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God, for an edition of Pastor to Pastor. It was a powerful time as we talked about his life in Christ, his call to ministry, and his thoughts on ways folks like us can stay close to our Lord.

In his book, The Power of the Call, co-authored by Henry Brandt and Kerry Skinner, there is a defining quote about who you are, what you do, and why you do it. Blackaby writes, "You are the custodian of the most important information in the world. You are a specialist in what God has to say to people through the Bible. Your divine calling far supersedes all other professions. Your presence and impact have eternal consequences in the world. What you say is in God's name and for His sake." That really puts a ribbon around your reason for being, doesn't it?

I am concerned that often people feel their contribution for the cause of Jesus Christ and to those they serve seems less than they had hoped. But never forget that the call of God on your life makes everything else pale in comparison! You have an awesome responsibility.

Philippians 1:6 says that God will complete the work He has begun in you. So remember that the Bible says and stay the course!
